4 Days Mount Kenya Climb Sirimon Route

Day 1: Nairobi – Nanyuki – Old Moses Camp

  • Altitude: 3,300m / 10,827ft
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Distance: 9km / 5.6 miles

Itinerary:

  • Depart early from Nairobi to Nanyuki (approximately 3-4 hours drive).
  • Arrive in Nanyuki for lunch and last-minute shopping or equipment rental.
  • Transfer to Sirimon Gate (2,600m / 8,530ft), where you’ll meet your porters and start the trek.
  • Begin the ascent through a forested path, encountering wildlife such as colobus monkeys and buffaloes.
  • Arrive at Old Moses Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Old Moses Camp – Shipton Camp

  • Altitude: 4,200m / 13,780ft
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Distance: 14km / 8.7 miles

Itinerary:

  • After breakfast, begin the long hike across the expansive moorland.
  • Pass through Liki and Mackinder’s valleys, with panoramic views of peaks like Batian and Nelion.
  • As you ascend, notice the change in vegetation from shrubs to rock and tussock grasses.
  • Arrive at Shipton Camp in the early evening, located directly below the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya.

Day 3: Shipton Camp – Lenana Peak – Old Moses Camp

  • Altitude: 4,985m / 16,355ft (Lenana Peak), 3,300m / 10,827ft (Old Moses Camp)
  • Hiking Time: 10-12 hours (summit and descend)
  • Distance: 20km / 12.4 miles

Itinerary:

  • Wake up at 2:00 am for an early start to the summit.
  • Ascend towards Lenana Peak, trekking in the dark and aiming to reach the summit at sunrise.
  • Reach Lenana Peak (4,985m) just in time for breathtaking views of the sunrise over the plains.
  • After the summit, begin the descent back to Shipton Camp for a short rest and breakfast.
  • Continue the descent back to Old Moses Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Old Moses Camp – Sirimon Gate – Nairobi

  • Altitude: 2,600m / 8,530ft (Sirimon Gate)
  • Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
  • Distance: 9km / 5.6 miles

Itinerary:

  • After breakfast, descend through the forest to Sirimon Gate.
  • Transfer from Sirimon Gate back to Nanyuki for lunch.
  • Drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
