Why Choose the Lemosho Route?

The Lemosho Route is often lauded as the most beautiful and scenic path to Uhuru Peak. Starting on the western side of Kilimanjaro, this trail offers lush rainforests, sweeping moorlands, and awe-inspiring vistas that will make your heart sing. The journey is designed to ensure proper acclimatization, giving you the best chance to reach the summit successfully.

Highlights of the Lemosho Route

  • Stunning Scenery: From dense rainforests to alpine meadows and lunar landscapes, this route has it all.
  • Wildlife Encounters: Keep your eyes peeled for colobus monkeys, elephants, and a myriad of bird species.
  • Less Crowded: Compared to other routes like Marangu and Machame, Lemosho offers a more secluded experience.
  • High Success Rates: With longer itineraries and gradual ascents, the Lemosho Route boasts a high success rate for reaching the summit.

The Journey Begins: Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Your adventure starts in the charming town of Moshi. Enjoy the warm Tanzanian hospitality, and let our team brief you on the journey ahead. You’ll have a chance to check your gear and ask any last-minute questions.

Day 2: Lemosho Glades to Big Tree Camp

Kick off your trek at the Lemosho Glades. The initial ascent takes you through a lush montane forest, teeming with life. After a beautiful 3 to 4-hour trek, you’ll reach Big Tree Camp where our team will have your tents set up and a warm meal ready.

Day 3: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp

The landscape begins to change as you leave the rainforest and enter the heath zone. Today’s trek is about 6 to 7 hours, offering stunning views of the Shira Plateau. Shira 1 Camp will be your home for the night.

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

A shorter trek today, about 4 to 5 hours, gives you ample time to acclimatize and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. You’ll cross the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world, before reaching Shira 2 Camp.

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

This is a crucial acclimatization day. You’ll ascend to Lava Tower at 4,600 meters before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is key to acclimatization and increases your chances of summit success.

Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Today is all about tackling the famous Barranco Wall. Don’t worry; our experienced guides will lead you safely over this obstacle. After a few hours, you’ll reach Karanga Camp, where you can rest and enjoy the stunning views.

Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Ascending steadily, the landscape becomes more barren and stark. You’ll reach Barafu Camp after 4 to 5 hours, where you’ll have an early dinner and plenty of rest. Tomorrow is the big day!

Day 8: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Rise early for the final push to Uhuru Peak! The trek to the summit takes about 7 to 8 hours. Witness the sunrise from the top of Africa—it’s a moment you’ll never forget. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Moshi

Your final day of trekking takes you through the lush rainforest back to Mweka Gate. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificate before heading back to Moshi for a celebratory dinner.

Day 10: Departure

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll transfer you to the airport for your onward journey, or perhaps you’ll continue exploring Tanzania with one of our incredible safaris.
