The Climb: Day-by-Day

Let’s take a closer look at what a typical climb with Lyimo Expeditions looks like. Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of the Machame Route, one of our favorites:

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

  • Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m
  • Distance: 11 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

After a scenic drive to Machame Gate, we begin our trek through lush rainforests. Keep an eye out for monkeys and exotic birds as you make your way to Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

  • Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

The trail ascends steeply through moorland, offering stunning views of the Shira Plateau. We camp near Shira Cave and enjoy a hearty dinner under the stars.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

  • Elevation: 3,840m to 3,950m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours

This is an acclimatization day. We hike to Lava Tower (4,630m) and then descend to Barranco Camp. The dramatic landscape and the Barranco Wall are highlights of the day.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Elevation: 3,950m to 4,200m
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

We conquer the Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding scramble. The trail then winds through alpine desert to Karanga Camp.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Elevation: 4,200m to 4,600m
  • Distance: 4 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

A shorter day to Barafu Camp allows us to rest and acclimatize before the summit attempt. We enjoy an early dinner and get some sleep.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

  • Elevation: 4,600m to 5,895m to 3,100m
  • Distance: 17 km
  • Hiking Time: 10-14 hours

Summit day! We start our ascent around midnight. The climb is steep and challenging, but reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is an unforgettable experience. After celebrating our achievement, we descend to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Elevation: 3,100m to 1,800m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Our final descent takes us through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, we receive our certificates and celebrate our incredible journey.
