Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Welcome to Tanzania!
Your adventure begins as you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where our friendly Lyimo Expeditions team will warmly welcome you. After a short transfer to your hotel in Moshi, the gateway town to Kilimanjaro, you’ll have some time to relax and acclimate to your new surroundings.
Evening Briefing
In the evening, join us for a comprehensive briefing session where our experienced guides will walk you through the itinerary, safety protocols, and the exciting journey ahead. This is the perfect time to ask any last-minute questions and ensure you’re fully prepared for the climb.
Day 2: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Altitude: 2,100m to 2,650m | Distance: 6km | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Rise and shine! After a hearty breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive to Londorossi Gate, the starting point of the Lemosho Route. Here, we complete the necessary registration formalities before beginning our trek through the lush rainforest. Keep your eyes peeled for the vibrant flora and fauna that call this area home.
Arriving at Mti Mkubwa Camp
Our first day’s hike is relatively short and gentle, allowing us to ease into the journey. By mid-afternoon, we reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, nestled amid towering trees. After setting up camp, enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by our talented chefs. Rest well, for the adventure has just begun!
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Altitude: 2,650m to 3,500m | Distance: 8km | Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Today, we leave the rainforest behind as the landscape transitions to moorland. The trail climbs steadily, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the lush valleys below.
Shira Plateau
As we ascend to the Shira Plateau, the vastness and beauty of this unique environment unfold before us. By late afternoon, we arrive at Shira 1 Camp, where we’ll set up camp and enjoy another delightful meal. Gather around the campfire and share stories with fellow adventurers as the stars light up the African sky.
Day 4: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Altitude: 3,500m to 3,850m | Distance: 7km | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Our journey continues across the Shira Plateau, with a relatively short hike to Shira 2 Camp. The day’s trek offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, including the iconic Kibo Peak, which will soon be within our reach.
Acclimatization
At Shira 2 Camp, we take a well-deserved break and focus on acclimatization. Our guides will lead a short acclimatization hike to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. Proper acclimatization is essential for a successful summit attempt.
Day 5: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Altitude: 3,850m to 4,600m (Lava Tower) to 3,900m (Barranco Camp) | Distance: 10km | Hiking Time: 7-8 hours
Today is a crucial day for acclimatization as we make our way to the Lava Tower. This challenging stretch takes us to an altitude of 4,600 meters, providing a taste of the thin air we’ll encounter higher up the mountain.
Descending to Barranco Camp
After a rewarding lunch at the Lava Tower, we descend to Barranco Camp, nestled in a picturesque valley. Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Altitude: 4,035m to 4,640m | Distance: 4km | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Today’s hike takes us to Barafu Camp, our staging ground for the summit attempt. The trail is steep and challenging, but the excitement of reaching the summit fuels our determination.
Preparing for the Summit
Arriving at Barafu Camp, we take the afternoon to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the final push to Uhuru Peak. As the sun sets, we’ll enjoy an early dinner before getting some much-needed rest. The summit attempt begins around midnight!
Day 8: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Altitude: 4,640m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) to 3,100m (Mweka Camp) | Distance: 17km | Hiking Time: 10-14 hours
The moment we’ve all been waiting for is here! In the pre-dawn hours, we begin our ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The climb is physically demanding and mentally challenging, but the reward is beyond words.
Reaching the Summit

Descent to Mweka Camp

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Altitude: 3,100m to 1,640m | Distance: 10km | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Our final day on the mountain takes us through the lush rainforest once again as we descend to Mweka Gate. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificates – a tangible reminder of your remarkable journey.
